Candle Care 101
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO YOUR BURNING BASICS
At Lee & Lou, our scented candles are lovingly handcrafted in small batches. While we strive for consistency in our products, each candle is unique due to the individual crafting process, which may result in slight variances.
Our candles are made from a natural blend of soy and coconut wax. As a result of the inherent characteristics of our wax, you may notice what appear to be “air pockets” along the sides of your candle. This is referred to as “glass adhesion” & can also happen from pressure of the wax inside the vessel, and during changes of temperature while in transit.
Please rest assured that these blemishes are not defects; they do not affect the quality or burn performance of the candle.

BURNING YOUR CANDLE:
Was it love at first light? Great! Now let's get to know each other a little better.
We will teach you the basics as well as things you didn't even think there was to know about candles & will answer all of your "burning" questions.Â
Need to troubleshoot? Have an issue burning your candle all the way through? Or finding ways to make your beauty burn better for longer? Get ready because we are going to break it all down with this guide and give you some bright ideas.
Here are some simple steps you can implement to ensure your candle lasts longer and burns better:
Please use common sense when burning your candle. Our candles are hand poured by us using only the highest quality ingredients & heat resistant glassware designed specifically for candle use. But they do need to be cared for by you... Please refer to the important steps outlined below to gain the most from your Lee & Lou Candle.Â
1: THE MOST CRITICAL STEP FOR YOUR FIRST BURN:
When lighting your Lee & Lou candle for the first time, it is very important to wait until the wax pool liquifies all the way out to the sides of the vessel. Once the wax pool is completely melted out to the edges, then you can blow out your candle.
Why is this the most important step you ask? Because if the flame is extinguished before the melted wax has reached the sides of the vessel, the wax has “memory” and will only burn out to this same position for the life of the candle and it will be an ongoing problem for the candle.Â
Once your candle has a set memory ring, this will cause what’s known as “tunnelling” where the candle burns deeper and deeper down the centre of the vessel leaving a rim of wax around the edge of the jar and eventually the candle will suffocate & won't stay lit anymore.
2: THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP TO DO BEFORE RELIGHTING YOUR CANDLE:
To ensure your candle has a strong, clean & safe burn, ALWAYS TRIM THE WICKS BEFORE RELIGHTING “pinching” or "trimming" the soft black ashy part off the wick prior to relighting is VERY important. (this applies to both wood and cotton wicks)Â
This will always give you the best flame! Your candle will thank you for it…
Â
3: ALWAYS ENSURE YOUR COTTON WICKS REMAIN UPRIGHTÂ (applies to vase candle cotton wicks only):
Over the life time of the candle, the cotton wicks may move/lean towards the glass while the wax is melted, if this happens, the excessive heat from flames resting near the glass over time, may cause the glass to blacken & even crack. Please check the positioning of the wicks prior to relighting and trim/move/reposition the wicks back towards the centre/away from the glass while the wax is softened to prevent this. NEVER ALLOW A CANDLE FLAME TO BECOME IN CONTACT WITH THE SIDE OF THE GLASSWARE.
Â
SAFETY REMINDERS:
Here are a few helpful safety reminders to making the most of your burn:
-The recommended maximum burn time for a Lee & Lou candle is for no longer than 4 hours.
-It is important to not leave an open flame near any children or pets who may be at risk of harming themselves or others.Â
-Burn your candles on a heat resistant surface. We recommend placing a burning candle on something to protect the surface beneath like a coaster, or marble tile etc.
-Never leave a burning candle unattended. Always burn in sight.
-Keep away from drafts to help burn evenly.Â
-For added safety, ensure the flame is extinguished as the wick nears the base of the jar or as the wax is close to being completely melted. At this point the glass can become extremely hot and may damage the surface underneath.Â
-Once your Lee & Lou candle has finished burning; Reuse, Restyle or Refill it!
